Bacteria or a virus?
Antibiotics treat certain bacterial infections. They do not work against viruses that cause colds and flu.
Not every infection needs them
Some mild bacterial infections improve without antibiotics. A clinician considers the likely course of illness and the risk of complications when deciding on treatment.
A useful question to ask
Ask why an antibiotic is, or is not, recommended. Unnecessary use contributes to resistance. If prescribed, follow the instructions and ask your doctor or pharmacist if anything is unclear.
